Simple Sourdough
A Course by Farmhouse on Boone
Sourdough is on the rise! (Get it? It’s a bread pun!)
But a quick search of the internet will return literally millions of results. Who should you trust? How do you know what method to follow?
And then you see the supply list! Do you really need a special basket, a razor blade, and a scale to get started with sourdough?
How did something as basic as bread become so… complicated?
Hey there, I’m Lisa, from the blog, Farmhouse on Boone.
I got started baking with sourdough over a decade ago. Way before it became popular and internet trendy!
In fact, when I was learning about sourdough, I mostly had to wing it. I had some baking experience before, and wanted to see if I could recreate baked goods that I traditionally made with a yeast packet with sourdough starter instead.
And through a lot of trial and error, I found a simple way to make sourdough breads, cakes, cookies, and so much more.
What started as a desire to bake something good for my family ultimately grew into a wealth of experience that is so much easier than most people think. And certainly easier than many internet chefs make it look!

Your Instructor
Hi! My name is Lisa Bass. I started my blog, Farmhouse on Boone, in 2016 as a way to share my creative ideas and handmade home with others. And one super big passion for me is sewing – everything from clothing to home goods!
I've sewed for most of my life, but only once I became an adult and mother did I really start taking the skill seriously. Since then, I've sewed hundreds of items for my children, my home, friends and family, Etsy customers, and myself!
In this course, I’m bringing all my knowledge together to help you master this skill, too! And if you’ve never sewed a stitch before in your life, I’ll help you get started and quickly master the essentials so you can bring your textile creations to life. Let’s get started!
Why sourdough?
Sourdough baking has exploded in popularity in recent years. And it’s easy to see why! The return to a slower baking process brought so much peace and contentment to people, as it does for me and so many other bakers.
But did you know that this method of rising bread from a sourdough starter is actually ancient?
Once upon a time, the tradition of keeping a sourdough starter and rising breads from native yeasts was passed down from generation to generation. (Even the starter itself would be handed down!)
In fact, prior to the isolation of yeast into the packet and quick leaveners like baking soda, a starter was the only way to rise baked goods!
But along the way, modernity found ways to isolate the yeast, make our flour shelf stable, and make feeding ourselves all around more convenient.
In many ways, these innovations are wonderful!
Yet, many people find modern breads tough on the gut, and even those of us with no intolerances can find most bread to be hard to digest.
As the world is returning to sourdough, we are rediscovering the holistic benefits of sourdough, as well as the pleasures of making a beautiful, delicious loaf of bread that does such a tremendous job of holding up our butter!
Whether you’re into sourdough for the health benefits, the slow-living pace of a long-ferment, or simply to expand your baking repertoire, I hope you’ll join me inside Simple Sourdough!
