Simple Sewing Series
There are few skills more essential to the running of a homestead than sewing. From the moment you spread out your fabric, you’re transported to a simpler, slower time.
Sewing is one of those skills that people regard as a talent. Oh, you can sew! That’s incredible!
But the truth is, this time-honored craft is much easier than most people believe. And with your trusty sewing machine, you can create high-quality pieces that will last a lifetime.
Sewing used to be the kind of trade that was passed down the generations.
But how do you start sewing if your grandma never taught you?
Hey there, I’m Lisa, from the blog, Farmhouse on Boone.
Even though I first sat down to the sewing machine as a kid, it wasn’t until much later in life that I began sewing seriously.
I wanted to master sewing for one simple reason: I was on a budget.
As a young mom with daughters to dress, I saw so many cute things in the shops and wished I could buy them.
That was when my creativity and thriftiness sprang into action!
I quickly learned – through plenty of trial and error – that making cute clothes with affordable materials was easier than I thought.
And as my family grew and my farmhouse style got stronger, my sewing machine stitched up a storm of pillows, slipcovers, and curtains to really make our home look and feel like ours.
What started as a desire to make cute toddler dresses ultimately grew into an abundance of experience with sewing that is so much easier than most people think.
And certainly cheaper and higher quality that most fast fashion and home goods stores would have you believe!

Why learn to sew?
Sewing is one of those hobbies that never really goes out of style. Though not everyone knows how, the tradition of sewing your own clothing and goods for your home is a tradition stretching back centuries!
But there are so many more reasons to love sewing.
💰 Sewing can save you money
Instead of spending big bucks on new clothing, new throw pillows, new drapes… You can buy or thrift a fabric you love and make it yourself! You can also do quick repairs and repurpose things you already own with simple modifications.
🌎 Sewing is environmentally friendly
When you make items yourself, you’re more likely to hold onto them. A well-made pillow cover, apron, or timeless skirt can last you a lifetime, keeping cheap worn-out items out of the trash and allowing you to skip the man-made materials that are so common in store bought items.
♻️ Plus, when you thrift old bedsheets, tablecloths, and other materials, you are giving new life to old items, too!
💐 Sewing is a beautiful hobby
For creative types, sewing can be a wonderful hobby to help you bring your vision to life! Experimenting with colors and patterns and fabrics can be such a pleasure. And making your house and wardrobe totally custom to your vision? 🤌 chef’s kiss, incredible.
👩🌾 Sewing is a valuable skill
There is a reason why most homesteaders learn to sew. It recalls a slower lifestyle, and it reflects the pride that people used to put into the items they made and used every day. And it’s so very useful!
🎁 Sewing can show someone how much you care
Giving a handmade gift can show your loved ones just how important they are to you. Your creativity, your fabric selection, the care and attention that you put into sewing all come together to make your gifts that much more special.
As more people are exploring traditional skills, sewing is one great trade to have in your back pocket, any time you want to whip up a seasonal pillow sham, put together a quick housewarming gift, find a gorgeous fabric, or give an old item a new life.
Whatever brings you to want to learn to sew, I hope you’ll join me inside the Simple Sewing Series!
