Hi! My name is Lisa Bass. I started my blog, Farmhouse on Boone, in 2016 as a way to share my creative ideas and from-scratch recipes with others. And one super big passion for me is eating home cooked meals with healthy, whole ingredients.
Way back when I was just starting to raise my (then small!) family, I learned about milling grains and baking whole wheat bread at a homeschool conference, and I was instantly convicted to introduce whole wheat baking into our home.
In fact, I was so committed to whole grains that when I first started my original sourdough starter 15 years ago, I did it with freshly milled grains. It was the only kind of flour I had!
In this course, I hope you’ll see what I saw in freshly milled grains: a surprisingly easy way to bring heartier, healthier food into your home, save money, and make more delicious food for your family. Let’s get started!
Since the earliest civilizations, humans began grinding cereal crops into flour to make food. Unlike other kinds of agriculture, a clean, dry wheat berry can last for months or even years, and is ready to become fresh, nutritious food at any time. A simple stone mill at home could make your daily bread.
Over the centuries, as civilizations grew, our technology advanced, and we adopted larger and larger scale milling methods. Fewer people ground their own flour at home, and after the industrial revolution and the invention of all purpose flour – a consistent, shelf-stable pre-milled flour with less nutrients but a lot more versatility – almost no one grinds their own grains anymore.
But there are so many more reasons to love milling grains at home!
💰 Milling your own grains can save you money
Pound for pound, you’ll get a lot more flour from the grain than what you put in. For larger families and those with less access to grocery stores, grinding your own grains fresh can be a real cost savings over time! In an age of rising grocery costs, whole grains can really help you stretch your budget.
🌎 Home milling is environmentally friendly
When you buy in bulk, and when you buy locally from local farmers, you support your local community of growers and you save a ton of shipping and packaging. Which is great for the environment! Since many whole grain enthusiasts also enjoy a variety of grain types, we keep biodiversity going, too!
🍞 Whole grain baking is delicious
There is nothing like the rich, nutty, and complex flavor of whole grain! All baked goods are delicious, but when you can make everything from a loaf of sandwich bread to a soft, fluffy muffin from wholesome whole grains? Every bite is extra tasty!
👩🌾 Milling is a valuable skill
There is a reason why most homesteaders learn to mill their own grains. It recalls a slower lifestyle, and it reflects the pride that people used to put into the foods they ate and served their families every day. Plus, when supply chains can make healthy, wholesome options hard to access, being able to make it yourself helps you build food independence as well!
🎁 Wholesome foods can show someone how much you care
Giving a homemade gift of wholesome food can show your loved ones just how important they are to you. Real, healthy, home cooked food nourishes bellies and spirits, and is always a welcome gift – in good times and in bad.
As more people are exploring traditional skills, home milling is a great one to have in your back pocket, any time you want to whip up a loaf of sandwich bread, a crusty boule, cookies, muffins, and so much more!
